Age shows more on your face than on any other part of the body and the area around the eyes can show age more than any other part of the face. Eyelid surgery can have a huge impact on how old you look and take years off your face giving you a more youthful and vital appearance.
It is common to develop bags under the eyes or drooping of the eyelids as we get older. Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is therefore one of the most impactful cosmetic surgeries available. This type of surgery is often combined with other surgeries such as a face-lift to gain an overall more youthful appearance.
Your eyes can really age you. With surgery, you can expect to look much younger. With the skin around the eye being much tighter after surgery the face looks much younger. This can really enhance how you feel about yourself and give you great self-confidence. Your surgeon can help you decide during your consultation what type of eye surgery will be best for you.
For the upper eyelid an incision is made in the natural crease above the eyelids. Excess fat, muscle and skin is then trimmed away and the incisions closed with tiny sutures.
For the lower eyelid the incision is made at the point of the lower eyelashes. Loose skin is pulled upwards and outwards to make it tighter and again the excess skin trimmed away and held in place with fine sutures.
A general anaesthetic is required for this surgery and therefore an overnight stay. The surgery itself takes between 1 – 3 hours.
There will be tenderness and swelling in the first few days after surgery this may also be accompanied by slight bruising. If there is any pain then pain killers will be prescribed. The surgeon may use ointment, eye-drops and bandages after your surgery to help the healing process. The sutures will be removed between 5 – 7 days after surgery and the scarring will begin to subside after a few weeks. We advise that you do not fly for 10 days after surgery. After this time it should be fine to return to work however you should avoid any strenuous activity for at least 1 month.
Eyelid surgery is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures and generally is done without complications. All surgery however does carry and element of risk. Complications can include bleeding (haematoma), problems closing your eyes when you sleep and swelling meaning that the skin around the eye can pull away. All of these are extremely rare and usually subside after a few days. These risks are minimised by experienced surgical technique, specialist care and by using highly qualified surgeons and nursing staff.
The risks are also minimised by making sure that you are in good general health before your operation. Your consultation with your surgeon will give you advice on how best to achieve this as well as letting you know of any risks which may apply to you.
